Welcome to Captain Catfish.com.  After 40 years of playing on this old Red River, catching hundreds of Giant Catfish annually, I finally decided to make the opportunity available for others to come share my fun. During the summer of 2000, we decided to put together a new company called Captain Catfish.com. After years of carting friends and family to all my favorite holes, I decided to start a Catfishing Adventure Touring company. Although we have thousands of lakes to choose from, we decided to focus on the Red River and the Winnipeg River System. Even more specifically, we are focusing our efforts on taking you on the hunt for Sumo Cats. Please accept this as our invitation to come up and check out our hospitality.                                                                                                                                                                                                            Capt. Read on and find out what we have to offer and how you can participate.
I have some great programs for you and your company this year.

Rick Thiessen (aka Captain Rick)

As a kid we used to sit by the river, down by the end of Moore avenue in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I guess I was about 14 or so. There we were, Glen Barbour and myself. Glen was my next door neighbor. We met a few kids down by the "rocks" as we called them. Every summer was the same for years. I can remember being on the water by sun up or shortly there after. Our parents would come down in shifts bringing us lunches , dinners, snacks or messages that it was now bath time and we had 15 minutes to be home.

I think it would be a real close estimate to say we would catch in excess of 50 fish a day. Big ones (in our eyes), monsters ! Some would measure almost 18 to 20 inches.  Even at that age and point in time, we practiced catch and release, which is why there are any fish left at all in this river system. Today, years later I am still fishing the Red River system and still pulling out cats. The thing is, I think they eat the same place I do because they are almost as large. Now we look at 20 inchers as a waste of valuable fishing time. If the fish isn't 30 inches or more we don't even want to bring out the digital camera and I do like my digital camera.

I have managed to fish some of the most popular spots in the province. There, of course, we fight off the dozens of  Cat Hunters that congregate daily from May to October.  Luckily we have managed to search out a few "Special Holes", far from the hustle and bustle of the others. Some of my largest catches on the river have come from areas not 5 minutes by boat from my house. This spot and a few others are marked on the GPS just for you. I'm looking forward to sharing some of these spots with you. See you in the spring and thanks for checking out my pages.
